Trusted Counsel for Higher Education Leaders
Specialized advising for College and University Boards, Presidents, General Counsels, and Executive Leaders who need an experienced partner to navigate strategy, risk, and complex problem-solving.
Where Legal and Compliance Insight Meet Institutional Vision
Leading a higher education institution requires navigating a minefield of legal risks, operational strategy, and workforce challenges. Often, the hardest problems cannot be solved by policy alone—they require strategic judgment, clear communication, and a deep understanding of the academic environment.
Tyrsen Higher Education provides strategic advising, confidential coaching, problem-solving, and specialized mediation services. We don’t just identify risks; we partner with Boards, Presidents, General Counsels, and other Executives to solve problems, optimize teams, and resolve the conflicts that hold institutions back.
Our Services
We provide the outside perspective and "in-the-seat" experience required to solve your institution's most nuanced challenges.
-
The Board’s Governance Partner. College and University governing boards serve as the ultimate stewards of the institution, yet they often face intense scrutiny while navigating a complex landscape of shared governance and regulation. We provide the independent counsel and training necessary to transform a board from a formality into a strategic asset.
Fiduciary & Governance Training: We demystify complex legal and fiduciary duties, helping board members clearly distinguish between "governing" and "managing." We provide the tools to minimize liability while maximizing strategic oversight.
Strategic Planning & Alignment: We facilitate high-level planning sessions that align the board’s long-term vision with the institution’s operational realities, ensuring that strategic goals are both ambitious and actionable.
Board Member Development: From rigorous onboarding for new trustees to ongoing education for seasoned members, we help build board capacity, enhance culture, and ensure every member is equipped to lead effectively.
Independent Strategic Advising: We serve as an objective, third-party advisor for the board’s most sensitive issues—including leadership assessment, crisis management, and navigating conflicts of interest—providing clarity when it is needed most.
-
The President’s Strategic Partner. University Presidents face a unique burden: they must balance the institution's vision with an increasingly complex legal and compliance landscape. We serve as a special advisor and coach to the President, helping interpret noise and turn it into decisive strategy.
Legal & Risk Translation: We bridge the gap between "legalese" and "presidential strategy," helping you understand legal and risk constraints without being paralyzed by them.
Problem-Solving & Facilitation: We act as a sounding board and facilitator for your toughest challenges, helping you assess facts, weigh political and budgetary realities, and craft a path forward.
Optimizing the President-GC Relationship: We coach Presidents on how to effectively utilize their General Counsel, ensuring the legal office supports your vision.
Workforce Strategy: Advising on high-level personnel dynamics, cabinet performance, and workforce needs.
-
Elevating the Office of the General Counsel. For General Counsels, the demand to be a "strategic business partner" is high, but the roadmap is often unclear. We advise GCs on how to transform their office from a reactive fire-fighting unit into a proactive, strategic asset.
Legal Strategic Planning: We assist GCs in drafting and executing strategic action plans that align legal priorities with the university's mission.
Communication & Value: Coaching on how to communicate risk effectively to the Cabinet and Board, demonstrating the ROI of the legal function.
Team Development & Training: Internal professional development and coaching to help legal staff grow, effectively prioritize, and improve client service.
Outside Counsel Strategy: Personalized strategy for assessing and optimizing the use of external firms to ensure budget efficiency and alignment with institutional goals.
-
Context-Aware Dispute Resolution. Standard mediation often fails in higher education because it ignores the unique ecosystem of the university. We provide mediation services rooted in the reality of academia.
The Insider Advantage: We understand tenure systems, shared governance, faculty senate dynamics, and the specific budgetary constraints of higher ed. You won't have to waste time explaining "how a university works" to your mediator.
Complex Disputes: Specialized facilitation for conflicts involving tenured faculty, senior administration, and department leadership.
Restoring Functionality: Our goal is not just settlement, but restoring the working relationships necessary for the department or college to function moving forward.

We help boards and executive teams build the organizational "muscle memory" required to navigate operational, legal, and reputational disasters. From structuring your readiness plans to standing by your side when a crisis hits, we ensure your leadership creates order, protects the institution, and speaks with one unified voice.
I. Crisis Readiness & Infrastructure Design
Before a crisis occurs, we help you embed resilience into your organizational structures and culture.
Incident Management Structuring: We help you identify and train your core crisis management team, assigning specific, non-overlapping duties: fact-gathering, legal risk review, ultimate decision-making, and communication coordination.
Operational Continuity Planning: When a crisis hits, executive leadership must pivot completely. We help you map lines of succession and identify essential personnel to ensure day-to-day operations do not collapse while leadership is managing the emergency.
Pre-Crisis Infrastructure: We audit and establish your foundational crisis tools, including communication templates (for rapid, fill-in-the-blank deployment), emergency services contract strategies, and insurance policy reviews to identify coverage for PR and crisis management resources.
Privilege & Documentation Training: We train leadership and staff on how to properly document facts, protect confidentiality, and purposefully maintain attorney-client privilege in communications to prevent unforced errors during public records requests or litigation.
II. Interactive Tabletop Exercises
You will never be fully prepared for an unprecedented disaster, but you must be prepared to respond. We design and facilitate rigorous tabletop simulations to build essential muscle memory.
Dynamic Scenario Facilitation: We construct highly realistic, unfolding scenarios (e.g., cyber breaches, active shooters, executive misconduct, natural disasters). Participants do not know the facts in advance—information is drip-fed as the simulation progresses, forcing real-time prioritization and pivoting.
Stress-Testing the System: We test your communication cascades, evaluate how well the board and executive team stay in their respective lanes, and assess your capacity to gather verified facts before making public pronouncements.
After-Action Reviews: Following every simulation, we conduct a comprehensive debrief to identify operational gaps, adjust protocols, and incorporate lessons learned into your foundational plans.
III. Active Crisis Advisory & Navigation
When a crisis strikes, "calm wins the day." We serve as objective, unemotional strategic advisors to the board chair, president, or executive team, helping create order out of chaos.
Information Flow & Decision Structuring: We help you implement recurring, tightly controlled briefing rhythms. We help separate verified facts from allegations, ensuring decisions are based on reality rather than panic.
Strategic Communications Control: Anything stated publicly during a crisis is set in stone. We advise on institutional messaging with a "deposition mindset," ensuring you know what to say, what not to say, and when making a comment or making “no comment” may be your strongest tool.
Board Discipline & Unified Voice: We educate and manage boards during active crises, ensuring only authorized individuals (typically the Board Chair and President/CEO) speak for the organization, protecting the institution from rogue statements.
Cross-Functional Coordination: We help you seamlessly integrate your internal legal counsel, communications department, and external resources (such as crisis PR firms, lobbyists, or law enforcement) to ensure a disciplined, unified response.
